Start the summer holidays with Lufthansa

Lufthansa_747_8iHoliday time means travel time. Around 750,000 children and young people flew with Lufthansa last year alone. The most popular destinations of the young guests on inter-continental flights were New York and Miami. For short and medium haul routes Barcelona and London were among the top destinations. This summer Lufthansa expects a total of 230,000 young passengers during July and August.
Lufthansa pays particular attention to the wishes and needs of young flight guests. The airline offers special services for families and children from the time they book through to the time they land at their destination. Helpful checklists and information concerning the journey with children on LH.com/Family ensure optimal travel preparation.

At home: online self-services make travel preparations easier
Passengers have the possibility to print out their boarding card at home 23 hours before departure via LH.com or download it onto their mobile device. With a valid boarding card they can also use the easily operated automatic baggage check-in at the airport, where they can send their baggage on its way with just a few simple actions.

At the airport: relaxing and enjoying the time before departure
At Frankfurt and Munich airports there are child-friendly family check-in areas with a large archway showing the Lufthansa mascots Lu and Cosmo. Travellers with children up to the age of twelve can check in here. Children will be given a boarding card for their cuddly toy, while parents will get the “family guide” with useful tips before departure.
Families as well as children travelling alone, along with their chaperones, can expect various childcare rooms and play areas in Frankfurt and Munich.
Children are also welcome in the lounges – with summer kits, which include presents such as sun hats and toys for the flight. One special highlight is the large children’s area in the Business Lounge in Frankfurt at Gate B48, which includes painting tables, a children’s cinema, Nintendo PlayStations and toys.
Thanks to the pre-boarding service, parents can board with their children before other guests. Prams and buggies can be taken right up to the aircraft door – in addition there are also free loan buggies available. Lufthansa offers a special childcare service for children and young people over the age of five travelling without a chaperone at all airports. About 80,000 children and young people travelling alone fly with Lufthansa every year, 30,000 of them in the summer months – this is up to 800 children on the main travel days in the summer holidays alone, who are entrusted to Lufthansa’s chaperones. The average age here is eleven. Staff on the ground and on board look after the children’s needs with diligence and lots of empathy, ensuring they are safely handed over to those collecting them at the destination airport.

On board: time flies by for both large and small passengers
So that they do not get bored on board, Lufthansa has had its own toy developed for the youngest passengers. About 1.44 million toys will be given to the small flight guests this summer. The range includes colouring books with exciting motifs, coloured pencils, “Lu and Cosmo” puzzles and card games, as well as reading material, such as magazines and puzzle books.
The inflight entertainment programme, with music, talking books and games, as well as films and documentaries designed especially for children, offers any amount of pastimes.
The range has recently been expanded by Pixi format little books by Carlsen with
augmented reality features. These are about the adventures of Lu and Cosmo at the airport and playfully stimulate the small guests’ senses with exciting, interactive functions.
A feast for the eyes – Lufthansa Kids Menus can be booked free up to 24 hours before departure via telephone or LH.com. Colourful children’s menus by star chef Sybille Schönberger are currently delighting small passengers on selected European routes and on all long haul flights. Last year alone, around 24,000 of such menus were served on board.
Babies are also well looked after on board: with comfortable baby baskets on all long haul aircraft, baby toys and changing tables in the washrooms of every aircraft. Furthermore, baby food, teas and bottles for infants are provided.

The new Lufthansa app for kids from the age of seven
Children love the world of flying. The first Lufthansa app for children “Departure! The comic cartoon journey for small passengers” is accordingly popular. Here, children up to the age of six playfully find out about the flight experience before the journey. From August the new app “Super JetFriends” will delight seven to eleven year olds. With this app, they will go on a tour of the airport with the Lufthansa mascots Lu and Cosmo and immerse themselves in the world of the “Super JetFriends”. The app users complete important tasks together with Lu and Cosmo: they’ll build their own super-plane, help the pilot navigate the aircraft, fuel waiting planes, test their knowledge and much more. Further information about the app is available on JetFriends.com, the Lufthansa and Miles & More club for children and young people.
