Athens is in the running to be crowned as Europe’s Best Destination for 2020, at the competition organised by European Best Destinations, in partnership with the greatest European tourism offices, developed to promote culture and tourism in Europe
Voting will last until 5 February 2020 and competing with Athens this year are 19 other European hotspots including Madrid, Berlin and Rome. The title will offer significant benefits to the winner, including its promotion through major international Media around the world and the enhancement of the destination’s image in Europe.

The nomination of Athens as Europe’s Best Destination for 2020 is added to a number of distinctions and favourable publications by established Media that praise Greece’s capital city worldwide.
Recently, the world famous travel website Lonely Planet featured Athens on its 10 “Best-value Destinations” list for 2020. Athens ranks ninth on the list and is characterised as “a vast outdoor museum”. According to the guide, “Admiring the glowing Acropolis at night is one of the most magical experiences in Europe”, and the Acropolis Museum is “dazzling”. The city’s architecture, relaxed atmosphere in the pedestrianised centre, and inexpensive eating out are also highlighted, while the Lonely Planet also suggests a tour to the nearby beaches, right outside the city centre. It also notes that visitors may have a taste of Greece’s wonders by taking a day-trip to the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion or the island of Aegina.
