An impressive Modern Art Museum that will showcase the mythical private collection of Basil and Elise Goulandris, is opening its doors to the public on 1st October 2019 in the centre of Athens.
The “Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum” will be housed in an imposing, state-of-the-art building in Pagrati district, a few steps away from Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro), at 13 Eratosthenous str. It is a self-owned property that harmoniously combines the beauty of a listed interwar building and the modern character of a new extension. Its construction began in August 2012 and was completed in October 2018.
The grand opening of the museum, which will comprise a series of fascinating events, will signal the beginning of a new chapter for Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, whose aim is to establish this new museum as a carrier of innovative cultural developments and activities, exploiting modern museological applications in the field of modern and contemporary Greek and international art.
The stunning museum, which has a total surface area of 7,250 sq. metres and extends over 11 floors, will feature rare works of art by great artists of the modern and contemporary European avant-garde, such as Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Degas, Rodin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Picasso, Braque, Léger, Miró, Giacometti, Balthus and others, as well as works of prominent Greek artists such as Parthenis, Bouzianis, Vassiliou, Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Tsarouchis, Moralis, Tetsis and others. In addition, the museum will be hosting periodical exhibitions by Greek and foreign artists, while the remaining, auxiliary spaces will house the museum’s store and a café-restaurant, an art library, a children’s workshop, as well as a state-of-the-art amphitheatre with a capacity of 190 seats.
