UNWTO Ministers’ Summit News Conference – World Travel Market, London, UK

The UNWTO Ministers’ Summit at the World Travel Market (WTM) is an annual event and is part of the WTM’s Ministers’ Programme. For the first time the Summit will be followed by a News Conference presenting the main conclusions and outcomes and highlighting the direction the industry will take moving forward.

The closure of European airspace due to the volcanic ash cloud last April demonstrated the need for a global legal framework for the protection of tourists. As a result, the 89th Session of UNWTO Executive Council (Kish Island, I.R. of Iran, 25-26 October 2010) has decided to initiate a study on a possible legal instrument for protecting tourists.

UNWTO Supports Regional Approach to Tourism Development in Europe

Cooperation at the regional level has proven to be crucial for the development of a profitable and sustainable tourism sector, as a further building block of national tourism development strategies. Following examples of other sub-regions in the world, UNWTO support for regional tourism development was underscored at the European level at the 5th International Conference of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization on “Tourism Infrastructure Development in the Black Sea region” (6-8 October, Sochi, Russia).

World Tourism Day Celebrations: Conserving Biodiversity, a Collective Responsibility

The official 2010 World Tourism Day (WTD) celebrations held in Guangzhou, China, have underscored the need for increased action by the global tourism sector - as one of the world’s leading economic activities - towards the preservation of biological diversity. Jointly organized by UNWTO, the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) and Guangdong Province, WTD celebrations brought together government representatives from around the world, leading biodiversity researchers, and private industry representatives.

UNWTO Advocates a Global Approach on Tourism, Aviation and Climate Change

Tourism is estimated to be responsible for about 5% of global carbon emissions. Air passenger transport is the major, and a growing, contributor to global Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) generated by visitors, with an estimated 2% of tourism’s global emissions. As part of UNWTO’s ongoing work regarding climate change and tourism, UNWTO stresses the importance of a global approach on Tourism, Aviation and Climate Change.
