Alitalia to launch its first ever direct Rome-Male flight from 31 October

Route operated for the whole winter season, until 24 March 2018

Alitalia will from 31 October launch its first ever scheduled direct flights between Italy and the Maldives. The new three-weekly Rome-Male service will operate for the whole winter season until 24 March 2018. The decision to launch this new service was taken to meet the increasing demand for flights between the two countries, especially during the winter period.

The new service is the fifth long-haul destination launched by Alitalia since last year – after Santiago de Chile, Mexico City, Beijing and Havana – and represents an important investment which aims to strengthen Alitalia’s presence in key routes for tourism to and from the Indian Ocean.

Cramer Ball, Alitalia’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “The Maldives have been a popular tourist destination for years, especially in winter, and Italy is the fourth country in the world for number of tourist arrivals to the marvelous archipelago of the Indian Ocean. Alitalia continues to enhance its intercontinental offer from Italy, identifying destinations with the greatest potential. With this in mind, we therefore decided to launch a direct flight between Rome and Male as we’re convinced that the new route will further contribute to increase Alitalia’s long-haul traffic”.

According to data from the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Maldives, over 71.200 Italian tourists traveled to the Maldives in 2016. This represents a 8.5 per cent growth compared to the previous year and this positive trend is continuing during the first two months of 2017. Italy ranks fourth among the originating countries for tourism to Maldives after China, Germany and United Kingdom, and ahead of much more populated countries such as India, Russia and the United States. The average stay for Italians in the Maldives archipelago is between four and eleven nights.

The new Rome-Male service will depart from Rome Fiumicino every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 9.45 pm and will land at 11.05 am (local time) on the following day. The return flight from the Maldives capital city will depart every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 1.10 pm (local time) and will land in Rome Fiumicino at 7.30 pm.

The flight schedule allows Alitalia passengers departing from over 50 cities in Italy and abroad, to reach the incredible sand cays in the Maldives by taking advantage of seamless connections at Rome Fiumicino hub. The new route will be operated with 250-seat Airbus 330 aircraft configured in three classes of service: business, premium economy and economy. On board the aircraft, Alitalia passengers will avail of newly renovated interiors, in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity for phone calls, Internet and e-mail. Business class passengers will be able to relax in luxurious Italian-brand Poltrona Frau leather seats that recline fully to a comfortable flatbed position and enjoy award-winning onboard dining featuring the best of Italian regional food and wine. Alitalia’s new ‘dine anytime‘ meal service allows customers to decide when they prefer to eat on board. Travelers in premium economy can relax in a quiet cabin with dedicated services. Also in economy class, Alitalia commits to delivering maximum comfort and quality of service.

Furthermore, Alitalia flies to the Maldives thanks to its codeshare agreement on Etihad Airways flights to Male, via Abu Dhabi.
Tickets for the new Rome-Male service can be bought online at alitalia.com, by calling the Alitalia Customer Centre on 89.20.10 (from Italy) or +39.06.65649 (from overseas), at travel agencies and at airport ticket offices. Members of Alitalia’s MilleMiglia loyalty programme can earn and redeem miles on the new service, and if they purchase a ticket to Male within 15 May, for travels before 15 December, they will receive an extra bonus of up to 5,000 miles.
