Hotel Grande Bretagne introduces its ‘Green Rooms’

Lobby - Reception Grande Bretagne hotelHotel Grande Bretagne, a Luxury Collection hotel, is committed to embrace its responsibility for environmental stewardship and to integrate leading environmental practices and sustainability principles into its  core business strategy, thus keeping in line with Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ environmental sustainability policy. The hotel strives to reduce the environmental impact of its business activities and continually improves and innovates on practices aimed at conserving natural resources, waste minimization, energy saving etc.
As of November 2nd, Hotel Grande Bretagne has designated all its rooms on the 3rd floor as ‘Green Rooms’. Improvements made to these rooms include:

BeeKind bathrooms amenities, by Gilchrist & Soames. These unique products combine environmental responsibility and personal luxury, with their paper bottle reducing weight of packaging material by 59% and waste space after use by 92%. The BeeKind Collection contains no parabens and phthalates chemicals, petrol-derived ingredients, mineral oil, urea, DEA, TEA or propylene glycol. Instead it contains food-grade, naturally derived USP glycerine, natural conditioning agents from honey and the Brassica plant and soybean and cottonseed oil. It is also free of artificial colors or dyes. BeeKind amenities embrace cruelty-free development and manufacturing practices, ensuring that products are never tested on animals. And last but not least, a portion of the net profits of these products support honey bee and sustainable pollination research.

Two recycling bins in each room for glass/aluminium and paper. This adds to the existing recycling program of the hotel, which is one of the largest in Athens and already recycles cooking oils, wax, toners, batteries, plastic and light bulbs.

The 3rd floor of the hotel also offers four PURE Rooms, with room numbers 306, 328, 330 and 332. These rooms are treated with a cutting edge process that cleans the air and surfaces, providing a unique clean-air environment. The process includes disinfecting and maintaining of the air handing units and cleaning of soft surfaces with a special solution that removes dirt, bacteria, mold and other allergy triggers. In addition, high ozone shock treatment removes lingering odors, leaving the air fresh and crisp, and PURE Shield is applied to the room making it impossible for bacteria to grow. Finally, allergy-friendly bed encasements make it even more difficult for dust mites and other allergens to trigger any allergic reactions.

In April 2010, Hotel Grande Bretagne received the “Green Key” eco-award, an international eco-quality program for tourism, proving yet again that the hotel actively protects the environment in any way possible, always looking for ways to sustainably improve.
