Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has reaffirmed his strong commitment to tourism as one of Morocco’s top national priorities. In a meeting attended by UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, on the occasion of the 10th Tourism Convention Day, the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism set the stage for the official launch of Morocco’s ‘Tourism Development Strategy Vision 2020’ (Marrakesh, Morocco, 30 November).

Tourism offers an effective and viable regional development tool through boosting economic growth and creating quality jobs. This was the central message coming out of the UNWTO Seminar on ‘Tourism as a Tool for Sustainable Regional Development’ . “Albania has the potential to build a new tourism sector for the 21st century and set an inspiring model for other countries,” said the Prime Minister of Albania, Mr. Sali Berisha opening the Seminar alongside UNWTO Secretary-General, Mr. Taleb Rifai.

UNWTO and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are working together towards the common objectives of job creation, sustained growth and fair globalization through decent work in tourism, the UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, has underlined at the ILO Global Dialogue Forum on New Developments and Challenges in the Hospitality and Tourism Sector (Geneva, Switzerland, 23-24 November).

UNWTO will assist the government of China in the formulation of its first ever national tourism law. Visiting the organization’s headquarters, a high-level delegation led by parliamentarians of the China National People's Congress and the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), agreed to request the technical and political support of UNWTO to design its normative framework for tourism. This announcement follows last year’s identification by the Chinese government of the tourism sector as one of its strategic development areas.
