Athens & Epidaurus Festival 2019 Greece’s foremost cultural festival… is happening in Attica!

Athens Festival

Theatrical performances by Greek and foreign artists, music concerts and tributes, opera, contemporary dance, visual arts and many other actions compose this year’s diverse events programme that runs from the end of May until the beginning of August in Piraeus 260, at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, in Megaron – the Athens Concert Hall, as well as in many other places in Athens and Piraeus. This is the Athens & Epidaurus Festival 2019, the greatest and most prominent cultural festival in Greece. And if you’re lucky enough to be visiting Attica this summer, be sure to attend at least one of its performances, for a truly unforgettable experience.

This year, in particular, classical music is highlighted at the festival, which features major orchestras and internationally acclaimed soloists, as well as foreign artists that will perform side-by-side with great Greek composers and singers. At the same time, it hosts famous theatre and dance figures from all over the world, introducing contemporary artistic trends to the Athenian audience and all foreign visitors of Attica. With the successful “Opening to the City” and its strong social character, the Athens & Epidaurus Festival spreads over many and different spaces, encompassing actions that speak of the position of individuals in the world, thus being a true city festival.

Prominent international artists will perform this year in Attica, such as the American director Robert Wilson, the Polish director Krzysztof Warlikowski, the celebrated Greek-British actress Kathryn Hunter, as well as the oldest active theatre company in the world, Comédie-Française directed by the internationally acclaimed, avant-garde director Ivo Van Hove.

The audience will have the opportunity to enjoy famous orchestras from all over the world, such as the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, the Wiener Symphoniker under the baton of conductor and soloist Leonidas Kavakos, the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra of the Ravenna Festival, the China National Symphony Orchestra, as well as major soloists such as Yo-Yo Ma performing Bach’s 6 suites for cello.

This year’s festival also features the Greek National Opera performing two new productions: Norma and La Traviata, while at the same time, world-famous contemporary music artists, such as Jethro Tull, Dead can Dance, Loreena Mc Kennit and Tindersticks will offer us unique music nights at the majestic Odeon, under the Acropolis.
