Starwood gambling on Google Glass technology

After creating a buzz around the launch of a virtual room key using smartphone technology earlier this year, Starwood Hotels plans to roll out an app for Google Glass users.

The company confirmed it will release a SPG loyalty program app for the wearable tech featuring a number of basic functions.

These include a voice-activated search for Starwood’s 1000-plus properties, personalized location based directions to all hotels, and hotel photos.

SPG members will also be able to see their Starpoints balance and details of any upcoming stays, but will not be able to make direct bookings through Google Glass just yet.

Glass users will able to search available room rates and directly connect by phone to reservations or book through an email link.

“For us, it’s clear to see the trend of the past decade and we truly believe there is going to be a new wave of wearables that are going to improve our guests’ and associates’ experience,” Holdren said.

Starwood has not confirmed a release date for the new app but said it will likely be available in “several weeks.”
