Three British climbers have been killed in an avalanche near Chamonix.
Two other Brits have been reported missing following the avalanche on the Mont Maudit slopes and rescue workers have been sent to the scene.
A spokeswoman for the Préfecture de la Haute-Savoie told the BBC: “Nine people are dead, three of them British. It is not known where in the UK they are from.”
Christian Trommsdorff, of the French Guides Association, said the nine people killed were of various nationalities.
“Between two and four people are unaccounted for. But they may not be under the snow. They may be elsewhere on the mountain,” he told the BBC.
A Foreign Office spokesman said it was aware of reports of three dead Britons and was “urgently seeking” information from the rescue authorities
