Champions League flights may be at risk due to the recent volcanic activity. After the explosion of the volcano Grimsvotn at Iceland a huge ash cloud started spreading over Europe. Many airports close down mostly over Iceland and Scotland. For several hours flights were canceled or delayed in Northern Germany (Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin) and the rest of Northern Europe. Airlines suggest that the passengers check their flight status again.
Although the volcanic activity has decreased, scientist state that Grimsvotn is still active and unpredictable. Wind directions make the volcanic ashes routes difficult to foresee, according to the London Weather Agency. Based on the above, many inbound flights to England are at risk of being delayed or even cancelled. This has created an additional stress factor to the Barcelona fans who want to fly to London from all over Europe for the Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United at the new Wembley stadium on Saturday the 28th of May.
A big problem could be expected to be caused to the fans of Barcelona if there are further activities of the volcano and depending on possible changes on the weather patterns. Although the emission of ashes is restricted to 300 meters high and the volcanic activity has declined, nobody can safely predict the short term, thus increasing the restlessness of the Barcelona fans in relation to the Champion League flights that may be cancelled. David Taylor, general secretary of UEFA mentioned that the Champions League final will not be postponed. Because of this statement, the Barcelona team has already arrived to avoid risk of flight cancellations. The organizers of the Champions League flights have already found alternative means of transportation via bus which will put the Barcelona fans in a 20 hour trip.
Athough Champions League Flights are at risk, Barcelona fans will do anything to attend the final, hoping their dreams won’t turn to ashes…
