Athens International Airport S.A. (AIA) completed successfully the Action related to the project “AIA’s Evolution into a high-performing node within the European Air Traffic Management (ATM) network”; the project is co-funded with EU (Action no 2017-EL-TM-0158-W), under “Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2017 – Transport Sector”, and is pivotal to the transformation of Europe’s aviation landscape, aiming to deliver a Single European Sky (SES) framework. AIA’s contribution underscores the company’s commitment to collaborative actions for the design and implementation of a brand new and highly efficient, air traffic management (ATM) environment, customer oriented and focused on sustainability and effectiveness.
The recently completed part of the project, is integral to a six-year flagship programme, ranging along five interrelated and concurrent projects, for the development and implementation of advanced concepts on airport operations (ConOps), featuring cutting-edge system functionalities and processes towards collaborative performance management, and integration of the airport operations within the wider ATM network. It adopts innovative operational and technological solutions, utilizing digital transformation plans, while educating stakeholders by engagement and effective change management. The output improves performance of the network and the airport, thus, facilitating SES’s objectives for operational efficiency, low environmental impact and enhanced passenger experience, all pivotal to AIA’s strategy too, for sustainable growth and social responsibility.
The successful completion of this Project resulted in AIA’s distinction with the “Highly Commended” recognition in the ACI EUROPE (Airports Council International Europe) Digital Transformation Award 2025, in partnership with SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU).
On the above grounds, we are thankful to EU/CINEA (European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency) and EYSSAE Unit (Special Coordination Service for Planning, Evaluation & Implementation – Mechanism CEF) of the Hellenic Ministry of Economy & Finance for their support. Also, to our industry partners, namely ALG Globe Infrastructure Advisors SLU, SITA Information Networking Computing B.V., Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) and AirportLabs Limited, as well as our operational stakeholders, Hellenic Aviation Service Provider (HASP/ANSP), Eurocontrol, Aegean Airlines, Sky Express, Goldair Handling, Swissport Hellas and Skyserv, all being valuable contributors throughout the Programme’s lifecycle.
AIA remains committed to forward looking initiatives for the development of end-to-end airport solutions and services, utilizing stakeholders’ experience and knowledge aiming to continuous improvement of safety and service quality, both on the ground operations and in the airspace; to this end, the implementation of the ongoing project “Extended Airport Operations Plan (e-AOP)” by 2027, under the EU co-funded framework of CEF 2022 and Common Project One (CP1), is our roadmap’s next key milestone.
