Routes World 2025
Athens International Airport has been voted by the airlines as the “Overall Winner” at the Routes World Awards, for the first time in its history!
While also winning the “Over 20 million passengers” category!
Athens International Airport climbed to the top of the world at “ROUTES WORLD 2025” (Hong Kong, 24–26 September), the largest meeting of the aviation industry, which traditionally recognizes the excellence of airport marketing and the top achievements in the development of global air connectivity.
Voted by the airlines, Athens International Airport was declared the “Overall Winner”, winning first place among all airports and categories, and at the same time topping the highly competitive category of airports with over 20 million passengers!
This year’s global Routes Conference gathered more than 2,500 airport and airline professionals, with Athens Airport being recognized as top internationally for its airport marketing strategy as well as the impressive traffic and network development results in Athens.
In 2024, Athens International Airport served 31.9 million passengers, a record number in its history and a 25% increase to pre-pandemic levels. The growth trajectory continued also in 2025, with traffic increasing by 6.8% in the first eight months compared to 2024, thanks to the opening of many new routes. Among these new routes, the launch of American Airlines to Charlotte, and that of Norse Atlantic Airways to Los Angeles stood out, while for 2026 new connections with India are in the pipeline with Aegean Airlines and IndiGo.
Ioanna Papadopoulou, Director of Communications & Marketing of Athens International Airport, stated:
“We are truly excited for this great double distinction at this year’s Routes World Awards! These awards are a recognition of our hard work and a big reward for our dedication, vision, collaboration, and team spirit! A huge “thank you” to our e airlines for their vote of confidence in the Athens market!”
By firmly committing to keep strengthening Athens and Greece’s connectivity with the world, Athens Airport reaffirms, through this year’s distinctions, its leading position on the global aviation map.
