The “Shipwreck of Antikythira” at the Museum of the Palace at the Forbidden City of Beijing

The Central Archaeological Committee agreed to extend the exhibition of the National Archaeological Museum – “The Shipwreck of Antikythira” at the Museum of the Palace at the Forbidden City of Beijing until the 14th February, 2019.

The exhibition consists of 350 unique ancient artifacts,amongst which is the copper head of a philosopher and a copy of the famous Mechanism of Antikythira.  All these exhibits were shipped over to the Museum of the Palace which is within the walls of the Forbidden City, which boasts the imperial palaces, one of the most famous in China and is visited by thousands of people from around the globe.  Around 40.000 people visit the museum on a daily basis. 

In fact, the Greek exhibition in China is considered to be of the most successful with about 16.000 people visiting everyday.

The Chinese media covers this exhibition in a remarkable way and refers to it not only from a museum importance perspective,but also from a scientific-archeological  one as well.  The wealth and the variety of the exhibits of the National Archaeological Museum in Beijing, the historical findings of the shipwreck and all that signified the evolution of archaeology in Greece and worldwide.  Moreover, it projects the Greek-Chinese collaboration within the cultural perspective. 

At the same time, the magnificent Chinese exhibition, “From the Forbidden City palatial quarters of Qianlong” continues to draw many visitors to the Acropolis Museum. The Chinese exhibition was opened by the Greek President himself along with the Undersecretary of Culture Mr.Costas Strati.  Both exhibitions – the Greek one in Beijing and the Chinese one in Athens will continue till the 14th February.
