Sifnos Holidays

Sifnos HolidaysSifnos holidays will be memorable for a lifetime! Sifnos is a small island in Cyclades. It can be reached by boat or high-speed from Piraeus which will take approximately 3 to 5 hours. Sifnos will begin to take over your senses the minute you arrive. It’s magical…

Arriving at Kamares port you will encounter a lively town, which will turn into a picturesque promenade with a beach and some quaint shops as soon as the boat departs. If you decide to come by yacht the port is an ideal place for you to anchor, with all the essentials that you would need for your holiday.

There are plenty of rooms to choose from here, otherwise you can make your way to the capital of Sifnos, Apollonia named after the ancient Greek god of Apollo. Apollonia together with it’s surrounding villages, such as Artemonas, named after the ancient Greek goddess Artemis, are connected and you must take the time to walk around the town. Everything in your Sifnos holidays will be found here. Comfortable traditional accommodation, exciting nightlife for all ages, unique Sifnos cuisine, a variety of shops. You must not forget the traditional Sifnos clay pottery to bring back with you as a reminder of your holiday.

The beaches in Sifnos are few and small but each one has a unique setting. Apart from the beach at Kamares port which has a blue flag, the others will definitely put a mark on your holidays. Visit the famous long sandy beach in Vathy where you can also find luxurious accommodation and taverns with a beach view known for their good food. Faros and Cheronissos are very picturesque and do not miss Chrysopigi with the famous cliff edge church where you may even have your dream wedding. Another must see during your Sifnos Holidays, is Kastro (meaning castle) a medieval village which was the first capital of the island. Walk around the small cobbled streets where you will also find Roman remains. Take a stroll down to its small harbour of Seralia and let your imagination take you away to the times of pirates, while enjoying your freshly caught fish of the day from local Sifnos fishermen.

For those of you in the mood for culture, Sifnos has a small variety of interesting museums. Stop at the pre-historic acropolis of Agios Andreas, with a newly opened museum. From this place they would light fires and send smoke signals across the highest points of the island informing the neighbouring islands of sea attacks from pirates. You can even plan your Sifnos holidays around the days that locals and volunteers, re enact this once a year to symbolize peace and harmony. Usually in June.

What to eat: One of the most famous Greek chefs, Tselementes that has inspired Sifnos and Greek cuisine till today and was born here. Your holidays should have a taste of his recipes. Try some local cheese, mizithra and manoura. Some main dishes you wouldn’t want to miss is an Easter dish named mastelo (specially cooked lamb in a locally handmade clay pot) which can be found all year round. Chickpeas are also cooked traditionally in a clay pot over night on a wood burner which is traditionally eaten on Sundays. Kaparosalata as a side dish and revithokeftedes as an appetiser. Finish with delicious sweets such as amygdalota, bourekia, melopita, loukoumia and halvadopites.

What to shop: Traditional clay pots, local cheese, sweets, honey and wine and hand made woven village textiles.

If you can encompass all this in your Sifnos holidays you will go home feeling relaxed and rejuvenated to look forward to planning your next visit!
