SWISS offers its first-ever Obwalden specialities on board

From today until the beginning of September, SWISS will be offering its First and Business Class guests on long-haul flights from Switzerland culinary delights from Canton Obwalden, in collaboration with the Hotel frutt Lodge & Spa. SWISS will also be serving special meals in Business Class in Europe in June to mark Central Switzerland’s Wrestling and Alpine Festival in its latest “SWISS Traditions” feature.

The cuisine of Canton Obwalden comes aboard SWISS for the first time today. In the latest phase of its popular “SWISS Taste of Switzerland” programme, which has been offering highlights of Swiss regional cuisine to long-haul First and Business Class
travellers on flights from Switzerland since 2012, SWISS is welcoming aboard the halfcanton of Obwalden in Central Switzerland. Andreas Appenzeller, the chef de cuisine at
Europe’s highest lakeside four-star-superior hotel, the frutt Lodge & Spa (which stands 1,920 metres above sea level), has concocted some truly special meals with creative alpine influences for his SWISS guests. Appenzeller has already earned 15 GaultMillau points for his creations in the hotel’s own frutt Stübli restaurant.

Alpine delights in First and Business Class

For SWISS Business travellers, Andreas Appenzeller has created a starter of smoked Balik salmon tartare with sour cream, while his main courses include a beef tenderloin with thyme sauce, Obwalden semolina slice and summer vegetables. His Business Class offering is rounded off with a yoghurt and honey mousse with strawberry sponge and Bircher muesli popcorn. SWISS First customers can enjoy a starter of lobster ragout with sea buckthorn coulis, pepper mousse and chutney, a main course of pike-perch fillets with chive oil, creamy risotto and red wine-glazed pearl onions and a dessert of white chocolate and raspberry mousse with crumble and raspberry sorbet.

The First and Business Class menus also offer speciality cheeses from Canton Obwalden, such as Bergmannli, Seiler Sarnerli and Kloster Bergkäse in Business Class and Seiler Grotto, Schacher Säppli Chäs and Sälmi goat’s cheese in First.

SWISS Traditions highlights the Central Switzerland Wrestling Festival Canton Obwalden will also be spotlighted on SWISS this summer in the latest feature of the airline’s “SWISS Traditions” programme, which celebrates the country’s festivals and customs throughout the year in culinary terms. The latest focus here is on Central Switzerland’s Wrestling and Alpine Festival, which will be held in Alpnach on 2 July. In addition to the wrestling, the event offers visitors a wide and colourful range of alpine food, drinks and traditional musical entertainment.

SWISS will be celebrating the Wrestling and Alpine Festival by serving special meals in Business Class on selected European flights from Switzerland between 21 June and 4 July. The culinary treats here will include Obwalden dry-cured ham with sliced cheese and a tomato salsa and, on longer flights, veal fillet with pepper gravy and potato gratin or a traditional Swiss macaroni gratin with pears. An Obwalden meringue with diplomat cream and berry compote will round off the tasty offering.
